Yes! And the Gamecube games play every bit was good on the Wii as they do on the Gamecube! Yes, you do need to get a gamecube controller (which plugs into the top of your Wii--the plugs are under a hidden panel), and a gamecube memory card--which you also plug into the Wii under a 2nd hidden panel on top, located just behind the power button.
I've picked up a number of used Gamecube games from resale stores for under $10! My favorite is "McGroovz: Dance Craze", which you play using the DDR dance mat as a controller, and offers a greater variety of songs and additional options.
