Sony drops backwards-compatibility forever
New 40GB PS3 marks the beginning of the end for back-compat support in PlayStation products
In a new eye-opener from Sony the company's revealed that it's to drop backwards-compatibility support in PlayStation products.
"...we believe this [backwards compatibility] less important now than when we launched... Furthermore we believe we should now be devoting our resources to the future of PlayStation gaming and delivering next generation experiences", Sony's said in a statement
on its plan to phase out the 60GB PS3 in the UK and leave the new cut-down 40GB model as the only one available at retail.
Sony's 40GB PS3 marks the beginning of the end for backwards-compatibility support in PlayStation products then. The console won't play PS2 games, although according to Sony 'The backwards compatibility of PSone titles is achieved through software and the vast majority of PSone titles are backwards compatible with the new PS3".
