Study: 25% of Web Users Visit Gaming Sites
One in four web users are frequenting gaming sites according to the results of a global study by Internet data analysis firm comScore.
The comScore World Metrix study, which took into account all sites offering online or downloadable games, excluding gambling sites, found that the sector attracted 28 percent of the total worldwide online population in May, recording an average of 9 visits per visitor.
Results also indicated that the number of unique visitors to online gaming sites has reached close to 217 million, a figure that represents year-on-year growth of 17 percent.
"With one in four Internet users visiting a gaming site, playing games online is extremely popular. The fact that these websites are pulling in over a quarter of the total worldwide Internet population shows what a global phenomenon gaming has become,” said Bob Ivins, EVP and managing director of comScore.
“The potential of the online gaming arena should be especially appealing for advertisers, as the average online gamer visits a gaming site 9 times a month," he added.
Yahoo! Games, which was particularly popular amongst North American and Asia-Pacific-based users, was the most popular onine gaming destination, registering 53 million unique visitors. Following growth of 16 percent since May 2006, MSN Games was the most consistent performer across all geographical locations. It attracted 40 million unique visitors in May, making it the second most popular online gaming property. Both destinations offer a variety of online titles of which puzzle and card games are most popular.
WildTangent Network, a US-based developer and provider of online and downloadable games, was the fastest-growing top 10 gaming property, witnessing 398 percent year-on-year growth to register 11.5 million unique visits during May 2007.
