GC 2007: SEGA Announces Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity Riders gets a sequel, and it's headed to Wii and PS2 in Q1 of 2008.
Sonic's racing career in the GameCube was short-lived, but the blue blur is headed to new ground this time around, as SEGA announced today that Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity will be racing to Nintendo Wii and PS2 in early 2008. Set in the same world as the original, Zero Gravity puts players in control of various racers from the world of Sonic the Hedgehog, featuring furiously fast gameplay and rollercoaster-like level design. Details are pretty scarce at this point, but SEGA has commented that the game will make use of two new "unique gravity control moves" that'll set Riders apart from its predecessor.
Scott A. Steinberg, vice president of marketing at SEGA of America commented on the game's announcement, stating that "Speed and agility is what built the Sonic franchise. Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity offers long-time Sonic fans, and newcomers alike, the adrenaline-pumping gameplay and moves that made the blue hedgehog famous, while adding a plethora of completely new elements to the Sonic world. Packed with new and innovative features, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity delivers a rush hat gamers can't resist."
Whether or not Zero Gravity will have what it takes to hurdle the GCN's less-than-impeccable debut, however, remains to be seen. The title will be hitting both PS2 and Wii in February of 2008, so we'll be sure to keep an eye out for Wii-specific features or graphical bumps once we go hands-on with the game later this year. As an added nugget of info, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity will also be implementing a series of high-speed racing machines that evolve as the game progresses, suggesting that Zero Gravity should have some added depth in the racing department compared to last year's endeavor.
