Hands-On: Geometry Wars Better On Wii

Hands-On: Geometry Wars Better On Wii

This might get me in trouble, but Geometry Wars Galaxies is way more fun on Wii than it was on the Xbox 360. I didn't play that much of the 360 game, but the simple change -- pointing with the Wiimote to aim your shots rather than use a second analog stick -- made the whole thing so much more intuitive for me.

There were two different single-player modes playable in the PAX demo: Galaxies, the new version, and the regular ol' Retro Evolved that appeared on Xbox Live Arcade at the 360's launch.

The controls are pretty much identical for both versions, but Galaxies adds a drone ship that follows you around at a slightly slower pace. Hold the C button on the nunchuk and it will spray a second line of bullets in the direction of yours, but again slightly lagging behind, so you always have two sprays of fire.

The other change to Galaxies is that the play area, at least in the first level, has been shrunken down to occupy a smaller portion of the screen. Enemies fly in from the large periphery -- they can't hurt you, and your bullets stop at the edge of the play area. You can pick them off one by one as they fly over the border into your area, but it seems like the way to rack up a high score is actually to let as many of them in as possible, then open fire. They'll start to run away out of the bordered play area when you let loose, but hopefully you'll get a big combo off of the pile of enemies first.

Maybe this should have been a Wii Ware game. I could certainly lodge that complaint. But maybe if Sierra releases this at a bargain price, all can be overlooked? We'll see what happens.
