PS3 price had to drop, reckons Nintendo bigwig
There’s nothing like a bit of inter-company mud-slinging to kick the week off, and Nintendo VP of marketing and corporate communications George Harrison (probably unrelated to Sony’s Phil) has kindly obliged us, by having a friendly stab or two at rivals Sony and Microsoft.
Speaking to GameDaily, Harrison was asked for his thoughts on Sony’s decision to drop the price of the PlayStation 3 in North America from $599 to $499. "I don't think they had any choice," opined Harrison, "It's pretty soon after launch to be dropping your price, but I'm pretty sure they had to do it. They had to start momentum in some form, but we don't think it's something that'll hurt us. It doesn't really affect us, since they're still far enough away." We’ll politely ignore the fact that the GameCube’s price dropped less than six months after launch, George.
Harrison also accused Microsoft of "discounting" Nintendo, and suggested that the firm had rushed the Xbox 360 to market, in turn setting itself up for the hardware problems that the machine is now encountering on an all-too-regular basis.
"I think [Microsoft’s] desire to be first and have a year head start on PlayStation […] caused them to rush into this, and so this rush to be out there a year in advance really set them up for the hardware problems that they're having now," he said.
Honestly, anyone else think Shane Kim, Kaz Hirai and Satoru Iwata in Atlaspheres would be a touch more entertaining than these constant, cross-continental digs? We’d watch that.
