How do you earn new Olympic Games in Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games for Wii?

I have read the instruction book trying to find out how to unlock new Olympic Games for Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, but I have not found it. What I am trying to to figure out is how to be able to unlock the locked games, such as the pole vault (which I did not have pre-unlocked). There are many games that are titled "???" which you have to unlock, and I assure you, I am down on my knees typing this on my computer, I REALLY NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You're supposed to play in the mission mode and earn star points for the characters; then gradually you'll unlock the games.

So far I've unlocked skulls (that's the canoe racing!)
