The Mail on Sunday have compared a variety of next-gen DVD players and directly pitted the Xbox HD-DVD drive against the PlayStation 3 Blu-ray player.
Players were graded on Output, with HDMI 1.3 connection being better regarded than the older 1.2 because the 'greater bandwidths allow Deep Colour, which allows for a far bigger colour palette.' Players were also graded on whether they displayed in True 1080p and whether the sound was lossless Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD.
Reviewer John Archer was happy with the 'strikingly affordable' price of the Xbox 360 HD-dvd setup, although he was looking at the basic hard-drive less Core model. He also praised the Xbox 360 and said 'as a gaming machine the Xbox may currently have the edge" however he criticised the 'soft and twitchy' pictures which he attributed to the 360s lack of HDMI connection.
Archer went on to criticise the high price of the PlayStation 3 but loved the images 'the richness and purity of the PS3's pictures rival that of stand-alone Blu-Ray players.' He also felt that 'crucially, its Blu-Ray performance is better than the HD DVD performance of its Xbox 360 rival.'
